Conceptualization

My concept was born in an attempt to find something at home to use as a colored lighting filter. I tried using plastic bags, colored water, and tissue paper. These materials were unable to create the type of color saturation that I wanted. Until I found a dish of Jello in the fridge. I shined my phone's flashlight through the glass dish and the color payoff was beautiful. I wanted to use the Jello as my source of color, with the goal of projecting multiple colors to fill the space.

Testing Process

I wanted the Jello I was working with to be firm and handleable at room temperature so that it would hold up when placed over the lights for as long as it took for me to shoot the video. I ran a series of tests to find the correct ratios of Jello powder, extra plain gelatin, and water. It took four tries to get the right consistency.

I couldn't bear to throw my Jello away just yet, I needed to use it for one last thing.
